What a Kenyan funeral usually costs money for
The biggest costs are usually mortuary charges (a daily fee plus preparation), the coffin, transport of the body and of the family, tents and chairs, catering for mourners, and printing the programme. Prices vary widely between funeral homes and counties, so call two or three and ask for their charges in writing.
How do families raise money for a funeral in Kenya?
Most families form a funeral committee with a treasurer and one M-Pesa paybill or till number, hold harambee meetings, and share the contribution details on the notice. Keeping one official number and a written record avoids confusion and fraud.
Can the cost of a funeral be reduced?
Yes: fewer mortuary days, a simpler coffin, sharing transport, a shorter programme printed in black and white, and catering only for the burial day all help. Agree on the budget as a family before spending starts.
